Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Get Started

  1. Step 1

Decide what kind of landscape lights you want to install. Pathway lights are either solar or low voltage. Solar lights are easy to install but may dim over time. Low voltage lights are harder to install but never dim.

  2. Step 2

Determine the amount of lights needed. Measure the length of the area you want to light. Use 1 light for every 3 to 5 feet.

  3. Step 3

Purchase all materials for the project.

  4. Install Solar Lights

  5. Step 1

Measure the walkway and place the lighting fixtures in the appropriate places.

  6. Step 2

Secure the fixtures by pushing their stakes firmly into the ground.

  7. Step 3

    Install each fixture's light bulb.

  8. Install Low Voltage Lights

  9. Step 1

Set up the transformer. It needs to be within 200 feet of the lights to provide full power.

  10. Step 2

String the gauge wire down each side of the pathway and to the transformer.

  11. Step 3

Attach the wire to the transformer. Unscrew the stations of the transformers and strip the ends of each wire. Wrap the stripped ends around the transformer and screw under the copper plate. Repeat for each section of the transformer, and secure the screws on the transformer.

  12. Step 4

Assemble the landscaping lights if necessary.

  13. Step 5

Run the wire between the light's bottom clamps and lock the clamps down.

  14. Step 6

Test the lights. Plug the transformer in and turn on the power. If the lights do not turn, check that the connections are tight. Also check that the light bulbs are secure.

  15. Step 7

Bury the wires just deep enough they aren't visible and can't be tripped over.

Tips & Warnings
  • Landscaping lights lose power the further they are from the transformer. If you cannot get close enough, use a larger transformer.
  • Do not work on the wire while the transformer power is turned on.
