Italy's temperatures are famously mild, with the exception of frigid mountain winters. Summers range from pleasantly warm to downright hot, depending on the region. So, while there is some variation, Italy's weather is generally as lovely as its scenery, and you can pack accordingly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Outerwear

  1. Step 1

Include a sweater that you can throw into your day bag when you go sightseeing. In the event you stay out into the evening, you will need something to protect yourself from the inevitable post-sunset chill.

  2. Step 2

Leave your heavy coat and winter accoutrements at home unless you are visiting during late fall or winter. You will especially need to bundle up if you will be in the more mountainous regions.

  3. Step 3

Incorporate a raincoat or lightweight jacket into your wardrobe if you're going in the fall or spring, but for the warmer months, a sweater should be sufficient.

  4. General Attire

  5. Step 1

Pack pants rather than shorts. Choose lightweight cotton or linen for the summer months and jeans or heavier chinos for the cooler seasons.

  6. Step 2

Select a few neutral-colored shirts that you can wear with various pants or skirts. Pick pieces that can be layered. Short sleeves are appropriate for spring and summer, but go for cotton long-sleeve tees and sweaters for fall and winter.

  7. Step 3

Take stylish yet comfortable walking shoes. Opt for dark, leaving your white sneakers at home; dark is more versatile and makes less of an "I'm an American" statement.

  8. Step 4

Bring as well an outfit of evening attire, including a nice pair of shoes. In a country renowned for its trend-setting fashion, dressing up for a night on the town is a must.

Tips & Warnings
  • Longer skirts and dresses are a good choice for women, since they are comfortable for walking in and are a dressier choice than shorts or pants. A longer skirt will ensure that you don't have a problem gaining admittance into churches.
  • Choose dark clothing when possible: natives tend to wear darker colors, and dark colors won't show dirt and can be dressed up when necessary.
  • Be prepared to wear pants and a shirt that covers your shoulders when going to visit churches. You may even be required to cover the full length of your arms at times. Not all churches have the same dress code, but those that don't allow shorts or tank tops will turn you away if you're not properly attired.
