How to Hike Fairfield Lake in Texas

Fairfield Lake offers hikers an easy day hike of about 5 miles, coupled with primitive campgrounds with plenty of amenities. The trail at Fairfield Lake features gently rolling hills of woods and grasslands, a pond and trail-side benches. An easy, enjoyable hike, Fairfield Lake is perfect for beginning backpackers and campers.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes
  • Loose, layered seasonal clothing
  • Water and snacks
  • Insect repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Plastic bag for trash
Step1
Go north on FM 488 from Fairfield for about 2 miles to the FM 2570 turnoff. Turn right on FM 2570 and drive to the FM 3285/Park Road 64 turnoff.
Step2
Drive about 3 miles to a turnoff on the left marked with a "Trail" sign. Park in the lot.
Step3
Take the trail from the parking lot west as it winds around Fairfield Lake. Signs along the first half of the trail identify many of the trees and other plants.
Step4
Follow the trail as it turns north and begins to track closely to the shore of Fairfield Lake.
Step5
Reach the end of the trail at the primitive camping area, where you'll find flush toilets, water and charcoal grills.
Step6
Return to the trailhead along the same path. Or to extend your visit, bring a tent for an overnight stay at the camp area.

Tips & Warnings

  • The very private campsites and amenities make this a pleasant park to camp at overnight.
  • The best time of year for hiking or camping at Fairfield Lake is October through April.
