The trail at Grapevine Lake offers residents of Dallas and Fort Worth an easy escape for a day hike. Most of the trail follows the shores of Grapevine Lake with open views of the water. Because of Grapevine Lake's close proximity to urban areas, you have to tolerate the road and lake noise, but the trail is still enjoyable for its lake views and dense woods.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Comfortable hiking boots
  • Walking stick
  • Snacks and water
  • Loose, layered seasonal clothing
  • Insect repellent
  • Trash bag
Step1
Drive to the visitor center at TX 26 and FM 2499 (Fairway Drive) north of Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport.
Step2
Drive north on FM 2499 about 2.5 miles and turn left into Rockledge Park. Turn right at all of the picnic area forks and park at the end of the road.
Step3
Set up a car shuttle to shorten the hike to 7 miles.
Step4
Follow the trail from the parking area at Rockledge Park as it winds northwest along the lake shore.
Step5
Hike through an abandoned picnic area and follow the trail along a segment of closed asphalt road.
Step6
Cross Simmons Road and pass through Murrell Park, which has water and restrooms.
Step7
Continue hiking the final 2 miles of steep hills and dense woods around a large arm of Grapevine Lake.
Step8
Return along the same trail, unless you have a car shuttle waiting where the trail ends at Twin Coves Park.

Tips & Warnings

  • Watch for poison ivy if you leave the trail.
  • No camping is allowed along the trail, although you may camp at the developed Twin Coves Park.
  • Mountain bikes are allowed along this trail, so watch out for them.
