There is an application process that you need to follow if you want to carry a concealed weapon in West Virginia. However, this process is simple compared to that of many other states. Remember, to get your permit you must be 21 years old and not have been convicted of a felony or be declared mentally incompetent.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Training course certificate
  • Driver's license or a state-issued ID
  • Seventy-five-dollar fee to apply plus an additional $15 when you receive the permit
Step1
Complete a training course before you even get the application for your permit. Costs and type of training courses vary depending on what you're looking for and what is applicable. For more information, please see the West Virginia Legislature homepage. (See Resources below.)
Step2
Go to the local sherriff's department to pick up and fill out an application. You will need to do this in person. You cannot send your concealed carry permit application through the mail.
Step3
Pay the $75 processing fee when you turn in the application. There will be an additional $15 fee when you receive the permit.
Step4
Bring your driver's license or a state-issued ID and your certificate saying you completed your concealed weapon training course when you turn in your application.
Step5
Renew your permit to carry a concealed weapon in West Virginia after five years.
Step6
Do not carry a concealed weapon in schools, at school functions, in government buildings or anyplace else bearing a sign that states "No Concealed Weapons," even if you have a concealed weapon permit.
