If you want to carry a concealed weapon in South Dakota, you will need a permit. Carrying a concealed gun without a permit is considered a misdemeanor. However, the process of getting a permit to carry a concealed gun in South Dakota is fairly straightforward compared to other states.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Driver's license or state-issued ID
  • Ten dollars

Step1
Verify that you meet the requirements to apply for a permit to carry a concealed gun. In order to get a permit you must be 18 years old, not have been convicted of a felony, have no history of violence, not be mentally incompetent or have a history of being habitually drugged or intoxicated. You also must be a resident of the county of application for 30 days.
Step2
Fill out an application. To get an application go to your local sherriff's office. The only document you'll need to process your application is your South Dakota driver's license. The concealed weapon permit application must be presented in person and then signed at the sherriff's office.
Step3
Pay a $10 processing fee for the concealed weapon permit application.
Step4
Wait until you pass the background check, which includes a criminal history check. If your application is denied, you may appeal.
Step5
Do not take a concealed gun even with a permit into courthouses, federal buildings, schools and businesses that get over half their income from the sale of alcoholic beverages. For more information visit the South Dakota legislation's homepage. (See Resources below.)
Step6
Renew your concealed weapon permit after four years.
