Ovens today are easy to clean, since most come with a self-cleaning feature. If you like your oven racks to keep their shine, you should remove them from your oven before starting the self-cleaning process. Here's how to get the racks shiny, clean and looking brand new.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Dishwashing soap
  • Old towels and washcloths
  • Large trash bag
  • Ammonia
  • Oven cleaner

Bathtub Method

Step1
Remove the racks from the oven and place them in your bathtub. Be careful not to scratch your tub; you may want to lay them on an old towel inside the tub.
Step2
Submerge them in hot water. Add liquid or granular dishwashing soap. Let them soak overnight.
Step3
Scrub with a washcloth in the morning to get them clean.

Trash Bag Method

Step1
Place the racks in a heavy-duty trash bag for a no-mess cleaning method. Do this outside on your driveway.
Step2
Add a half-quart of ammonia and seal the bag tightly. Let them soak overnight.
Step3
Rinse them in the morning with the garden hose.

Oven Cleaner Method

Step1
Lay your racks on an old towel on your driveway.
Step2
Spray oven cleaner on the racks and let them soak overnight.
Step3
Scrub off any stubborn bits and rinse with the garden hose.

Self-Clean Method

Step1
Leave the racks in your oven and use the self-cleaning feature if you do not care what your racks look like.
Step2
Notice that over time the racks lose their shine and the texture will change to rough.
Step3
Rub the racks with some salad oil to get them to slide easily again.
