How to Get a Cosmetology License in Kentucky
Income opportunities for cosmetologists include working at beauty salons or owning their own business. Related careers are teaching at a cosmetology school, managing a salon or working as a sales representative in the beauty care industry. Full- and part-time work is available. A cosmetology license is also transferable to other states with additional requirements.

Wait until you are 16 years old with a 10th grade or equivalent education before applying for a license. Kentucky has a two-tiered format. Your first goal is to get your apprentice cosmetologist license.

Enroll at a certified cosmetology school. Check out the government's directory of listed schools offering courses in cosmetology at the Kentucky State Board of Cosmetology website. (See Resources below.)

Complete 1800 hours of credits to qualify for the initial license of apprentice cosmetologist. This license is good for 18 months unless an extension is approved by the Kentucky board.

Obtain an application from your school and submit to the state board. Wait for their approval to take the exam.

Note the dates and times the tests are offered at the Kentucky State Board of Cosmetology website. Schedule the examination and receive your apprentice license.

Work as an apprentice for six months under a licensed cosmetologist in a licensed salon. You must average 20 hours each week.

Finish your apprenticeship then apply for the second examination., which covers the practical aspects of your field. The Kentucky board issues the regular cosmetologist license upon passing the test.
