Before you can apply to work as a cosmetologist at the salon down the street, you need to be licensed to work. Only people with a cosmetology license can get paid to cut hair, do makeup and other jobs in a salon. Here's what you'll need to do to get your cosmetology license in Indiana.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have proof that you have completed at least two years of high school. You can only apply for your cosmetology license in Indiana if you have passed the 10th grade.

  2. Step 2

Be at least 18 years old before you apply for your cosmetology license. Anyone younger cannot get a license.

  3. Step 3

Complete at least 1500 hours of courses at an approved cosmetology school. In Indiana, you cannot use apprenticeship hours to substitute for hours of coursework.

  4. Step 4

Pass Indiana's written and practical exams.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have a cosmetology license in another state, you might be able to transfer your license to Indiana. You can do this if the state you're licensed in requires 1500 hours of courses or more. If you had fewer hours of courses, you can substitute experience. Each year of experience can count for as many as 100 hours.
  • If you want to transfer your license to Indiana, you must have taken a practical exam in the state that awarded you your cosmetology license. If you've never taken a practical exam, you will have to take it in Indiana before you can get your new license.
