Before you can get paid to be a cosmetologist, you have to get a license. Each state has its own rules for getting a license. Some require course work. Others will accept apprenticeship hours. Still other states might let you transfer your license from another state. Here is what you'll need to do to get a cosmetology license in Hawaii.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be a U.S. citizen, national or resident alien with approval to work in the United States. Only these people can get a cosmetology license from Hawaii. All others can apply for a temporary license through the Hawaii Board of Cosmetology and Barbering.

  2. Step 2

Get 1800 hours in courses or 3600 apprenticeship hours.

  3. Step 3

Sign up for the cosmetology license exam. In Hawaii, the exam is a written one.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can combine your course hours and apprenticeship hours. Two apprenticeship hours equal one course hour. You must have 1800 course hours to qualify for a cosmetology license.
  • If you are licensed in another state and have one year's work experience, you can apply for a license in Hawaii.
  • If you have a license in another state and you have taken 1800 course hours or more, you can get a cosmetology license in Hawaii.
  • If you have a license in another state and you have taken fewer that 1800 course hours, you will need to take additional courses before you will be considered for a cosmetology license in Hawaii.
