Becoming a cosmetologist requires more than just buying your own pair of sheers. Each state has its own rules and process for granting a cosmetology license. Here is how you can get a cosmetology license in Arizona.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Make sure you have at least two years of high school education before you apply for your cosmetology license.
Step2
Be sure you fit the age requirement. In Arizona, you cannot get a cosmetology license unless you are at least 23 years old.
Step3
Have at least 1600 hours of practical training from a licensed cosmetology school in Arizona. If you attended a cosmetology school in another state, you can apply to have your courses transferred.
Step4
Pass a written and practical cosmetology exam.
Step5
Pay the necessary fees to get your license.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you fail part of your exam, don't worry! In Arizona, you can retake the part of the test you failed.
  • If you come from another state, you can get your cosmetology license in Arizona. You will need to apply to have your hours of training transferred. Check the Arizona Board of Cosmetology website for more information. (See Resources below.)
  • Don't wait too long to retake your cosmetology license exam. If you wait longer than one year, you will have to retake the entire exam, and not just the part you failed.
  • Be sure to renew your cosmetology license on or before your birthday every year. If you don't, you will have to pay a fine.
