How to Fuse a Rope

Ropes are essential for outdoor activities such as camping or boating. Ropes are made of twisted fibers that can unravel at the ends. Once the rope becomes unraveled, it is no longer usable. If you fuse a rope before using it, you can prevent it from unraveling. Follow these steps to fuse a rope.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Use synthetic rope. You cannot fuse a rope made of natural fibers because it will burn.
Step2
Go to a well-ventilated area because the synthetic rope will make fumes when it is melting. Bring along a candle and matches.
Step3
Cut the ends of the rope if they have become frayed.
Step4
Light a candle or match.
Step5
Hold one end of the rope a few inches from the flame. Melt and fuse each end of the rope. Allow them to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • A candle flame will give off enough heat to fuse a rope up to one inch in diameter. If you are using a rope with a larger diameter, a propane torch will work better.
  • Use a three-stranded rope, if possible. It is the most durable because when it is pulled or stretched the fibers in the three strands meld together, making it stronger.
  • Do not touch the ends of the rope immediately after fusing. They will be hot and sticky.
  • Do not try to fuse a rope made of natural fibers such as cotton, hemp or sisal because they will burn.
  • Do not hold the synthetic rope too close to the flame while fusing because it can ignite and burn, releasing toxic fumes.
