Instructions

    • 1

Combine 2 tbsp. of water and the marshmallows in the bowl and put the bowl in the microwave for 30 seconds.

    • 2

Stir the mixture and put it back into the microwave for two minutes. Keep stopping the microwave and stirring the mixture every 30 seconds. Do this until the marshmallows are melted.

    • 3

Coat with shortening an area on your countertop on which you will spread the marshmallows. If you don't coat the countertop, the mixture will stick to the counter.

    • 4

Dump the marshmallows and 3/4 of the sugar onto the greased countertop. Apply the shortening to your hands before kneading the mixture, as the latter will stick to your hands.

    • 5

Knead the marshmallow mixture for a few minutes and add the remaining sugar. Knead the mixture again for about eight minutes or until it is not sticky. You may need to grease the countertop and your hands again.

    • 6

Stretch the mixture. If it tears easily add a little water and knead it again. The finished result should be a ball that can be stretched without tearing. You will need it to stretch to shape over a cake.

Tips & Warnings

  • Marshmallow fondant can be made ahead of time and can be stored in a refrigerator for weeks.
