Betta fish make a colorful addition to any home. Low maintenance and easy to care for, they are a good pet for the person on the go. So if you want to get your own collection started, here's how to buy your first Betta fish.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit a pet store like Petco, Petsmart, or your local store. Betta fish aren't something that you should buy over the Internet.

  2. Step 2

View the fish and simply pick your favorite. There isn't much in the way of making a choice other than finding which one you like. Most Betta fish come in self-contained containers; they cannot be in the same tank with other Betta fish since hey will attack each other. Consider buying multiple fish to spread out over your home.

  3. Step 3

Purchase supplies for your Betta fish at the pet store. The great news about Betta fish is that they require very little in their bowl, though you can buy rocks, trees, treasure chests or other ornaments. Also, Betta's like small areas, so make sure each bowl you buy is intimate. Purchase Betta fish food. Also purchase a "stress coat" to add to the water which will ease the transition of your Betta fish.

  4. Step 4

Add water to your Betta fish bowl and then allow it to come to room temperature before putting the Betta fish in his environment. Be sure to add water from the bowl the Betta fish came in into their new bowl.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy different shapes of bowls and place them on your dinner table. Add Betta fish and they become an interesting center piece.

on 1/26/2009 This is crazy!! if you want a good betta do the exact opposite of this article, with the exception of using a stress coat conditioner. other than that buy as big a tank as you want certainly 2 gallons minimum because you will need a heater to heat the water to 78-80 degrees. cycle your tank, this will take up to six weeks. don't go to walmart or petco. these stores do not take care of their bettas so if no one buys them all their bettas will die and they will stop selling/abusing them. buy quality bettas online from a reputable breeder please pull this article its been over a year!

on 12/1/2007 This whole thing is garbage. Do some research before writing something like this next time. Betta from places like Petco and Walmart tend to have a lot of health problems and come with unknown lineage. Betta need to be kept at high temperatures, so they should always be kept in heated tanks- not bowls. You should also never throw a fish into an uncycled tank, this can cause many health problems and potentially kill your fish.

on 9/17/2007 I agree with the last post. The bettas at the pet store aren't all that great and are usually sickly. I have 4 from PetSmart myself, though and they've all done well. And you CAN keep females in a community tank with different fish. Do some research first. The females don't have the pretty tails or colors like the males have, but they're lively ladies and fun to watch.

on 8/10/2007 this author doesn't know what he/she talking about. first of all, Bettas are fine to ship from one place to another. they can stay hungry for a week without any trouble in that plastic bag with just lil bit of water. secondly, bettas at pet store like petsmat, petco are junks. they are too old and ugly. most of them are veil tails. you need to buy bettas from reputable breeders. and lastly, bettas were originally live in rice field! do you know how big the rice field is in asia? they can live in a cup that doesn't mean the fish are happy. If you can afford buy larger bottle.
