How to Get Brain Freeze

People experience brain freeze when they eat something very cold very quickly. The cold temperature affects the nerves in the roof of the mouth. These nerves send a message to the brain that it needs more blood to keep warm, which swells the blood vessels rapidly and causes a painful headache.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Ice Cream
  • Bowl
  • Large spoon

Step1
Retrieve your favorite ice cream from the freezer. If you don't have ice cream an iced beverage such as a slushy beverage, soda, milk, or anything cold will also work but ice cream tends to be colder than ice.
Step2
Scoop out a huge bowlful of ice cream and grab a large spoon.
Step3
Go outside if it is a hot day. When you eat something cold in a warmer environment you are more likely to get brain freeze because of the extreme change in temperature.
Step4
Eat the ice cream fast. Make sure it touches the roof of your mouth to get the full freeze effect.
Step5
Grab your head as the blood vessels start to swell and you feel that headache or brain freeze that will last anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only about a third of the population can feel brain freeze.
  • To quickly relieve the pain of brain freeze, take a drink of warm water and hold it to the roof of your mouth.
  • Getting brain freeze, though painful, will not cause any lasting damage or after effects.
