Yoga requires the body to move in many directions. If your clothing is uncomfortable, not only does the exercise become less enjoyable, but it loses its effectiveness. Follow these steps to dress for yoga success.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Kick your shoes. Yoga is practiced barefoot, with very few exceptions. You will be more comfortable and agile without shoes weighing you down.

  2. Step 2

Wear short shorts. Well, relatively short shorts. Long baggy shorts are a bad idea for yoga. Not only will they be in the way during some moves, but they will slide right down as your leg goes up. This is a little too revealing for yoga apparel.

  3. Step 3

Suit up with a unitard. Although these one-piece wonders are usually worn by the more devoted yoga crowd, this kind of apparel is a good option for flexibility.

  4. Step 4

Give yourself a spandex shopping spree. Spandex clothing is very common apparel for yoga. Not only is it flexible, but it also stays in place. You don't have to worry about revealing body parts with spandex clinging to your thighs.

  5. Step 5

Free your arms and shoulders with a tank top. Tanks are cheap and comfortable, and just as common as spandex when it comes to yoga apparel.

  6. Step 6

Be comfortable. Any yoga guru will agree--the most important thing to remember when choosing yoga apparel is comfort. If you can't relax, you might as well skip the class.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many yoga participants prefer to dress in organic fabric outfits. This apparel keeps with the "au naturale" spirit and cleansing ritual (mentally, emotionally and physically) of yoga.
  • Pull your hair back. Loose hair can distract you during yoga.
  • Practice at home before go to class. Replace any uncomfortable or or revealing apparel.
  • Leave the Chanel at home. Fellow yoga participants do not appreciate strong smelling perfumes or colognes during the exercise.
  • Take off all jewelry before a yoga class. Dangling earrings, necklaces and bracelets are just as distracting as improper apparel.
