It takes hard work and perseverance to develop a singing career. If you think you have what it takes, here's how to start.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take singing lessons. Even if you already have a great voice, lessons will teach you technique, and a good teacher will prepare you for onstage performance, working with musicians and other essential elements of singing.

  2. Step 2

Audition at local nightclubs, lounges and community music theaters. Join a local band. Check for open mics at nightclubs in your area. Get singing gigs at weddings, parties, nursing homes and private group meetings.

  3. Step 3

Make a demo tape of original songs and send it to record labels, managers, producers and radio stations. Find a recording studio with a good engineer.

  4. Step 4

Get an agent. Agents can help you get you in touch with managers, producers and other people in the music industry you might not have access to yourself. Agents handle the business matters so you can concentrate on singing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never sign with an agent who charges you money.
