If you're tired of dragging the garden hose out to water your grass, it's time for a lawn sprinkler system. If you're feeling ambitious, you can install a lawn sprinkler system yourself. Just follow these instructions.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sprinkler system (vary by manufacturer)
  • Measuring tape
  • Hacksaw
  • Shovel
  • Spade or trenching tool
  • Stakes
  • String
  • Solvent cement
  • Level
  • PVC pipe
  • Stop-and-waste valve
  • Control valves
  1. Step 1

Lay out the lines for the sprinkler system with stakes and string. Dig trenches by removing sections of sod and placing aside, then dig 6 to 12 inches(dependent on the severity of frost in your area). Make sure trenches are level.

  2. Step 2

Place 3/4-inch PVC pipe in the trenches. Join sections with solvent cement. Insert 3/4-by-1/2 inch reducing tees for each sprinkler head every 7 to 10 feet apart. Assemble a manifold with control valves to be attached to the water supply line to route water to the lines.

  3. Step 3

Install sprinkler heads on tees. Make sure heads of sprinklers are flush with the tops of the trenches. Consult the manufacturer's manual for your sprinkler system for proper head installation.

  4. Step 4

Tap into the water supply line in your garage or basement by installing a tee just past the water meter. Drill an exit hole through the masonry. Install a shutoff valve and a stop-and-waste valve for emergency purposes as well as a means to drain the system in the winter. Attach pipe to manifold.

  5. Step 5

Wire the control box to the control valves. Test system. Refill trenches by fitting sod around the sprinkler heads.

Tips & Warnings
  • Blow out water from the system during the winter to prevent lines from freezing.
  • Brown spots on your lawn may indicate a clogged pipe or sprinkler head.
  • Check your local building codes for proper lawn sprinkler installation.
