Save yourself a huge hassle and thousands of dollars by taking some simple pictures of your belongings for insurance. Taking pictures helps aid your memory when filing a claim and provides proof that you did own certain items in the event of theft or a disaster.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Take pictures of every room in your house from every angle. Zoom in to shelves with small items and open drawers to ensure all your belongings are in your insurance pictures.
Step2
Photograph any valuables individually. Place items against a plain white background. Take pictures in a brightly lit room so the flash will not be necessary. The flash is not good for fine details and will cause glare.
Step3
Use your camera's macro mode for especially small valuables such as jewelry or coins. Place another item in the picture for a size reference such as a ruler or currency.
Step4
Take a separate picture of the serial number on electronics. This could help prove to your insurance company you owned the item or help find it in the event of theft.
Step5
Burn the picture files to several compact discs. Place one copy of the disc in a fire and water proof safe made especially for computer media. Place a second copy of the disc at work or at the home of a friend. Upload your pictures to an online photo sharing site such as flickr.com so in the event of an insurance claim, your pictures will be safe.
