As your parents age, there are many things that you must consider. Although they may be fine and healthy now, an illness or accident could cause their health to deteriorate. It's time to start talking about the future with your parents.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Realize that this is a touchy topic for everyone. Many aging parents think that "the talk" is your way of trying to get rid of them or rule their last remaining years. Let your parents know that you only want the best for them.

  2. Step 2

Decide together where your parents will live. They may stay in their home with a health provider, move in with you or move into a group home. While the good Samaritan in you may insist that they live with you, you must assess all the responsibility you'll be assuming, such as finances and personal hygiene.

  3. Step 3

Inform yourself about health care. Determine whether your parents have adequate health insurance and a dependable doctor. Know which health issues you might have to watch and address.

  4. Step 4

Attain power of attorney if your parents can't take care of their own finances anymore. With power of attorney, you'll handle all of their financial issues. Hire a lawyer to draw up the documents that transfer power of attorney.

  5. Step 5

Insist that your parents write a will. The will should clearly state how all of their possessions will be distributed. Make sure that your parents understand that they have complete control over the contents of their will. Help them find an attorney.
