Whether you want your photo to look posed or spontaneous, a group portrait will look its best if you follow these steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
For a planned portrait, decide on formal, semi-formal or casual dress. Take the portrait outside if possible, as space is limited in many portrait studios. Pose the group inside the flash range of your picture at night or inside.
Step2
Notice the light. Position people so the sun is on their faces and not casting a shadow. Capture the photo near a landmark such as a tree, rock, bridge or bench.
Step3
Arrange individuals so that their faces/bodies create a triangle or curve to create visual interest.
Step4
Pose the assembly so their shoulders are at a slight angle to the camera. Tell the group to use their hands to create an angle so the hands do not hang limply by their sides. Have the crowd look at the camera at a slight angle to soften asymmetrical features.
Step5
Gesture in a humorous way to get your subjects to relax and smile naturally. Take multiply photos varying the arrangement slightly each time.

Tips & Warnings

  • If everyone is color coordinated or matching, the portrait can look kitschy.
  • Do not line people up is a straight horizontal or vertical line.
  • If you take too many pictures, those in the portrait will become stiff and the finished product will not look natural.
