There are service quality risks in any industry. These risks are especially high any time you have to choose something or someone where official credentials are not mandatory. There are many factors you should consider when you choose a voice teacher.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk to the potential instructors about their qualifications. Ask if they are professionally trained. Ask them to tell you about the biological factors involved in singing and vocal care.

  2. Step 2

Listen to their performances. Pay attention to their vocal qualities. You will not sound exactly like them, but they probably will pass any bad habits they possess onto you.

  3. Step 3

Match your instructors' techniques to the style or styles you want to learn. There are many different styles. Some may be acceptable in rock or pop but otherwise inappropriate for an operatic setting.

  4. Step 4

Choose your music. Look for someone with some flexibility in music choice. You sometimes must practice with pieces that are very educational but not fun. In an ideal setting, you would balance these pieces with songs you can pick and enjoy.

  5. Step 5

Open your pocketbook. Price ranges vary. Decide what you can afford. Be realistic and consistent. If you are preparing to sing in a rock band, it's not necessary to pay for professional opera lessons.

Tips & Warnings
  • Track your progress. If you do not notice an improvement, change voice teachers.
  • Pain isn't good. If your throat is sore, tell your teacher. If your instructor does not offer you any solutions, then find a new voice teacher.
