Research shows that nearly 5 percent of teenagers experience depression at some time. Temporary depression is a normal human emotion. When the feelings continue and interfere with a teenager's ability to function it can be a sign of mental illness. Parents watch for the signs.

Check for behavioral changes like withdrawal from friends and family. Depressed teenagers become disinterested in sports and activities they once enjoyed. They frequently isolate themselves in their bedroom.

Note physical signs such as a loss of appetite, sluggishness, sleeplessness, a detached look and a change in physical appearance. Some depressed teenagers lose weight.

Monitor a demonstration of emotions such as sadness, hopelessness or guilt. Disinterest in family conversations or group activities are common in teenagers with depression.

Watch for writing poetry on morose subjects and listening to music with pessimistic lyrics. Depressed teenagers spend more time on the Internet searching for websites on self-destruction and suicide. They also display curiosity about death and the afterlife.
