Research shows that nearly 5 percent of teenagers experience depression at some time. Temporary depression is a normal human emotion. When the feelings continue and interfere with a teenager's ability to function it can be a sign of mental illness. Parents watch for the signs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Check for behavioral changes like withdrawal from friends and family. Depressed teenagers become disinterested in sports and activities they once enjoyed. They frequently isolate themselves in their bedroom.
Step2
Note physical signs such as a loss of appetite, sluggishness, sleeplessness, a detached look and a change in physical appearance. Some depressed teenagers lose weight.
Step3
Monitor a demonstration of emotions such as sadness, hopelessness or guilt. Disinterest in family conversations or group activities are common in teenagers with depression.
Step4
Observe the teenager's performance in school. Remorseful teenagers often lack concentration, suffer from memory loss and show an inability to make decisions.
Step5
Watch for writing poetry on morose subjects and listening to music with pessimistic lyrics. Depressed teenagers spend more time on the Internet searching for websites on self-destruction and suicide. They also display curiosity about death and the afterlife.

Tips & Warnings

  • Seek professional help if your teenager shows suicidal behavior. Antidepressants and counseling along with support from friends and family may be necessary to cure this illness.
