Instructions

    • 1

Place the dog on a raised surface. Use a non-slip mat to avoid injury. If possible, have someone hold the dog while you cut its nails.

    • 2

Slide the nail trimmer over the nail. Stay in the white part of the nail; the pink part contains blood vessels; cutting too far back will cause bleeding.

    • 3

Squeeze the handle of the nail trimmer smoothly and firmly. Do not try to pry the nail off; when the trimmer is used properly, the nail pops off.

    • 4

File the edge of the nail. Or, you can let the nail be worn smooth by walking the dog on hard surfaces like sidewalks.

    • 5

If you cut the nail too far down, use a styptic pen or a powder to stop any bleeding. For dogs with black nails, cut the tips only where the nail is whitish.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't forget to trim the dog's dew claws as well. These nails grow further up on the dog's legs and do not make contact with the ground.

  • Remember, trimming just a little is best. The nails should protrude just over the dog's pads. Do not cut them too short.

  • Cut dog's nails regularly. Walking on overly long nails can lead to nail bed infections, broken nails and bleeding.

  • There are different types of nail trimmers available for different breeds and sizes of dogs. Consult with your veterinarian or pet shop owner about the best type to use for your dog.

  • Always cut nails from underneath, not from the tip downward.
