Earthquakes manifest as gentle tremors or a shattering rumble that can occur any place. Follow these steps to teach school students how to react in the event of a quake.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Explain to the students about the signs, consequences and geographic facts about earthquakes. Encourage class discussions and schedule model demonstrations of an earthquake.
Step2
Conduct "Duck, cover and hold" drills in the classroom. Direct the students to get under the desk or table, cover their heads and necks and hold on to table legs during your imaginary earthquake.
Step3
Practice simulation exercises both outdoors and indoors. Take time after the simulation to allow students to respond. Discuss their fears and concerns.
Step4
Create an earthquake emergency kit by dividing the class into teams and assigning responsibilities. Include items like bottled water, flashlights, whistles, colored flags, hard candy and other durable foods.
Step5
Invite a volunteer from Red Cross or the fire department to discuss first aid procedures.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tell students where to find the safest place in the classroom. This should be away from doorways, open shelves, bookcases, large panes of glass and hanging pictures. Make sure they know the location of all emergency exits.
