How to Make a Papier Mache Balloon
When the kids are bored and you're looking for a fun craft to get their creative juices flowing, make a papier mache balloon and let the good times "blow." A papier mache balloon can be turned into anything--from a face to a hot air balloon. Follow these simple steps and you too can turn a bland newspaper and simple balloon into a work of art.
Things You'll Need
- Newspaper
- Round balloon
- Flat dish or pan
- Tempera paints
- Paintbrushes
- Wallpaper paste or wheat paste
- Yarn or rubber band
- Safety pin

1
Mix the wallpaper paste or wheat paste until it has a thin and creamy texture. Pour a small amount into a flat dish or a pan.
-
2
Rip the newspaper into several narrow 6- to 8-inch strips. The more strips you make the better: you'll need a lot to cover the balloon.
-
-
3
Blow up the balloon. Tie the end of the balloon with yarn or wrap it tightly with a rubber band.
-
4
Soak the newspaper strips in the paste and put them on the outside of the balloon. Cover the balloon completely. Repeat this step 2 to 3 more times so that there are several layers of newspaper covering the balloon.
-
5
Remove any excess paste with your hands while smoothing the surface of the balloon.
-
6
Allow the newspaper to dry thoroughly. When the papier mache balloon is completely dry, take a safety pin and pop the balloon.
-
7
Decorate the papier mache balloon by painting squiggles, lines or flowers. Or turn your balloon into a head by painting on a face; or a hot air balloon by adding some string and a small cardboard box to the bottom of it!
