Step 1
Make counting fun. Make sure the process of learning numbers and counting is something that the child looks forward to instead of something difficult and upsetting. Keep the learning time light and teach that numbers are fun to avoid anxiety.
-
Step 2
Use liberal praise whenever the child can rattle off a few numbers in sequence. Use positive reinforcement to help keep the atmosphere of fun.
-
Step 3
Use props to count. Count actual items that the child can see instead of using abstract numbers that can make it hard to relate the numbers to real objects. Use trees, leaves, or anything else in the area when toys are not available.
-
Step 4
Make counting into a game. Offer rewards and treats when the child counts correctly. Allow the child to teach you to count during the course of the game.
-
Step 5
Read counting books. Buy any of the many counting books geared toward small children that feature brightly-colored items for the child to count.
-
Step 6
Ask the child to find numbers of items that you have placed around the house. Encourage the child to make his own groups of items to be counted.
-
Step 7
Let the child see you counting out loud regularly to encourage the behavior. Let her see that you enjoy counting.
