West Virginia has hundreds of fishing locations throughout the state. A fishing license is required by the state and easy to get. Just follow these steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

You don't need a license if you are: a legally blind state resident, over 65, under 15, an active member of the armed forces member, fishing on your own land, a disabled vet or a POW, resident or patient of a mental health or state institution or a developmentally disabled resident.

  2. Step 2

Check that you have been a resident of the state for at least 30 days. This is the required time period for eligibility to buy a fishing license at the resident price.

  3. Step 3

Apply for a non-resident license if you are not a resident of West Virginia. These licenses are available as annual, one-day, or National Forest Fishing. Full time students of WV state colleges and universities are considered residents and will only be required to pay resident fees.

  4. Step 4

Fishing the Ohio River has reciprocal regulations. West Virginia residents with valid licenses may fish the Ohio side of the river without purchasing as Ohio fishing license.

  5. Step 5

When fishing the Ohio River proper, follow the West Virginia fishing laws. Ohio tributaries are not included in this rule.

Tips & Warnings
  • You will need a valid email address and a printer to print out your license and sales receipt. You are required to sign your printed license and carry it with you whenever you go fishing. You will also need a photo ID.
  • You will pay a transaction fee of 2 percent of the subtotal of your license cost if you purchase online.
