How to Avoid a Quarterlife Crisis

Experts have identified a point in many young people's lives referred to as a quarterlife crisis. Similar to a midlife crisis, it is characterized by a sense of anxiety and a feeling of being lost. During a quarterlife crisis, people often change jobs, change careers, and move, and their lives are significantly changed. College students and young adults can find ways to avoid this emotionally difficult state.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Get an early start. A college degree pointing you in the direction of a career you would be happy in set a precedent of purpose and fulfillment for years to come.
Step2
Acquire relevant, real-world experience through networking, part-time work, co-op programs, internships and volunteering.
Step3
Learn all that you can about the type of career and job you want. Understanding what a typical day is like, what skills you need, what typical hours are and what salary to expect are all important in making this big life decision.
Step4
Find a mentor. It's helpful to have someone older to reflect on your goals, hesitations and ambition. Potential mentors can be family members, friends, professors and past or current bosses.
Step5
Discover yourself. Try new experiences, travel, meet different people and challenge yourself to do new things. Each of these shape who you are, what you want to be, what you love, and what you can become.
