How to Join a Fraternity Step Team

Fraternity step teams have existed in the United States for several decades. In "stepping," fraternity pledges and members alike move in a synchronized fashion without the use of music to keep beat. The origin of stepping is unclear. Some feel the steps resemble African tribal dances; others believe it comes from African-American Masonic rituals.

Instructions

    • 1

Do your research. First, investigate which fraternities have active chapters at your college and university, which participate at or host step events and which one best fits your personal style. Some fraternities have houses you reside in, others have meeting spaces on campus, many participate in charitable events and have several social obligations. Weigh your options carefully. Typically, fraternities host tours and informational meetings before pledge week.

    • 2

Find out the requirements for membership. Different fraternities have different guidelines. Alpha Phi Alpha, one of the most prominent step fraternities, accepts members who attend a university with an active chapter, have passed half a year with at least a 2.5 GPA, are full-time students working toward a degree, have good character, are registered voters (unless ineligible) and are sponsored by three fraternity members in good standing.

    • 3

Meet deadlines for applications, interviews and any other requirements.

    • 4

Undergo the trials of pledge week if the chapter selects your application (or "bid") for membership.

    • 5

Survive pledge week and be initiated ceremoniously into the fraternity.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fraternities have rules against hazing during pledge week. Do not put yourself in a compromising situation or agree to anything you don't feel comfortable doing. If you feel you're being hazed, advocate for yourself and bring your concerns to the authorities at your university or in the organization itself.
