How to Join a Sorority Step Team

Joining a sorority step team is a great way to become an active member in campus life and offers a chance to network with other college women. Stepping began in the 1920s when fraternities started to use the rhythmic patterns to show synchronicity among their pledges and members and honor their heritage. Later, sororities began to adapt their dancing traditions to become more drill-like as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Do your homework. Investigate all the sorority chapters on your campus. Find out which ones participate in stepping and learn as much as you can about each one. Ask current members questions. Attend their informational meetings and take a tour of the sorority house, if they have one. Most sororities will actively welcome questions and visits before pledge week.

    • 2

Determine which sorority best matches your interests and style. Once you have decided on a sorority step team, find out all you can about their requirements. Each sorority is different.

    • 3

Complete all the necessary application materials by the deadline.

    • 4

Participate in pledge week if your application is selected. This should give you a great chance to get to know the other pledges as well as current members.

    • 5

Survive pledge week and earn the ceremonial "pinning" or other initiation rite that your sorority traditionally uses.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure you consider the chapter dues before making a commitment.

  • College campuses don't allow hazing. Do not participate in any activity that goes against your better judgement. If you feel you are being hazed, advocate for yourself and speak to the chapter's authorities and campus authorities.
