How to Care for a Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is compatible with most human families. It sheds very little and is virtually hypoallergenic. It is social yet independent, and it is small enough to suit apartment life. It is a low-maintenance dog that usually gets along well with other pets and children.

1. Provide a high-quality diet. Educate yourself on canine nutrition, and read the labels on pet foods.

2. Keep your dog on heartworm prevention, and take her to the veterinarian once a year for vaccines, a checkup and a fecal test.

3. Have patience with house-training. Bichon Frise dogs are notoriously difficult to housebreak. If necessary, provide water only at mealtimes to regulate urination habits.

4. Socialize your dog early. Make sure that he is exposed to lots of different people and other pets. Because it has been so popular, the Bichon Frise has not always been bred for temperament and can sometimes get a little snippy.

5. Have your dog groomed once a month to keep her long hair healthy and looking good.
