Bearded dragons are excellent pets to have. Originally from Australia, bearded dragons are good-natured, small in size, love attention and are relatively easy to care for. Follow the tips below for housing a bearded dragon.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a home for the bearded dragon that is clear and transparent. It may be glass or plastic. Aquariums are good choices.

  2. Step 2

Put a wire top on the cage. Having a lid to the cage prevents the animal from getting out. It also prevents other pets such as cats or dogs from getting at the lizard. Make sure it is a wire top and not wood, glass or Plexiglas. These materials will not allow enough air circulation.

  3. Step 3

Make sure the house for the bearded dragon is large enough. A 10 gallon tank works for a hatchling, but as the lizard grows, the home also needs to grow. A 20 gallon tank works if the bearded dragon is less than ten inches long. After that move to a 40 gallon tank, or larger. A 55 gallon tank allows plenty of room for movement and running.

  4. Step 4

Keep the tank at the correct temperature. It should constantly be between 95 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Use a combination of florescent and incandescent lights to bask under and hot rocks. Keeping a thermometer at each end of the tank will help regulate the temperature.

  5. Step 5

Keep a shallow dish of water in the tank for drinking. Change the water daily.

on 1/4/2009 The tank temps need to be different on each side, the basking side needs to be 95-105 degrees, and the other side of the tank needs to be 70-85 degrees. this gives the beardie a chance to regulate its body temperature. Dont make the whole cage 90-105 degrees, that could get it sick, or kill it!
