The garage is one of the largest spaces in the home and it is usually the most congested and cluttered. A simple solution for garage clutter is to use well designed storage systems. Here is how to design a garage for maximum usability and storage.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what primary use your garage will serve. Garages can be designed to be used as a home office, craft room, woodworking shop, storage room, art or pottery studio or just a space for parking cars.

  2. Step 2

Enlist some friends to help finish the walls and paint the garage. A finished and freshly painted garage is nice to be in and easier to keep organized and clean.

  3. Step 3

Enhance the comfort and usefulness of the garage by installing a new floor. Self fastening rubber flooring pieces are wonderful to cover and beautify an old, stained garage floor.

  4. Step 4

Consult with a remodeling expert about raising the roof and adding a workspace above the garage. This could be a solution for a home office without changing the floor plan of your home.

  5. Step 5

Add extra windows or change the existing garage door to an opaque fiberglass material or even glass to add light for a shop or studio area.

  6. Step 6

Mount storage racks, wall storage systems, built-in shelving, cabinets, ceiling storage units, bicycle hanging hooks, workbench and work area, baskets, bins and other storage systems specific for your intended use.
