How to Drive Through Iowa

Whether you are driving through Iowa for business or pleasure, there are many interesting things to do along the way. The 29th state is mostly known for its agricultural products, but it has many cities as well. As you drive through Iowa, take the time to enjoy some Hawkeye State treasures.

1. Enjoy the mighty Mississippi River that forms the entire eastern border of the state. There are numerous scenic highways along this waterway. Or, take a cruise on the river. If gambling is more to your liking, Burlington has riverboat gambling available.
2. Join the fun of a University of Iowa football game in Iowa City. In the winter, the games move indoors for basketball.
3. Travel back in time in the Amana Colonies. Located a few miles north of Interstate 80 near Williamsburg, you can visit a communal farm colony. Treat your family to a home-cooked meal that is served family style. Sample homemade meat products, cheeses, wines and beers.
4. Catch the glint of the gold dome in Des Moines, the capital of Iowa. Visit one of the many cultural displays there. Or, visit the World Pork Expo in early June. The Iowa State Fair takes place at the state fairgrounds in early August. Both events provide glimpses into the culture of the state. Just west of Des Moines you'll find the Living History Farms.
5. Notice the agricultural resources of the state in the rural areas. Iowa farmers plant soybeans and corn and also raise cattle and hogs.
6. Be aware of horse-drawn carriages. Iowa has a sizable Amish population. Stop at one of the group's many shops to learn more about the Amish lifestyle.
