How to Invest in Fixer-Upper Domain Names

An Internet domain name is just like real estate. Just like property can be improved by fixing up the house on the property, a domain can have increased value by sprucing up the website hosted on it. There are large profits on the horizon, but you need to know what you are doing.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Decide on a niche market. Choose something interesting to you.
Step2
Look for suitable domain names for sale. There are a number of sites that offer domain names that can become fixer-uppers. Another place to look is e-commerce forums. Do due diligence on the site to make sure it is legitimately owned and operated before you purchase it. Also be sure the domain name can be easily transferred to the Internet service provider (ISP) of your choice.
Step3
Identify the traffic pattern to the domain. Check its Alexa ranking. Natural traffic, rather than advertised traffic, is best. Figure out why the site has a problem so you can fix it.
Step4
Refurbish the site once you buy it. Use keywords linked to your content for search engine optimization. Examine the revenue from the site. Explore ways to increase income from the website.
Step5
Resell the Internet domain name and its website. Not all domains will make a large profit. However, with some experience you should be able to make money on your investment.

Tips & Warnings

  • A domain name can be purchased as a fixer-upper and resold within weeks. However, sometimes it does take time to repair one to a point where it has decent market value.
