If you're searching for a fun fresh look for your hair then get chunky. Chunky highlights are a great way to take on a new hairstyle without having to dye your entire head. Just follow these steps and discover a positive new meaning to the words "getting chunky."

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shop the product. Getting the right product is important. Depending on whether you have shorter or longer hair, a different technique is used to highlight. Get the box with the cap and hook for short hair and paint brush for long hair.

  2. Step 2

Match the color. Choose the color that is right for you. If you want the highlights to be warm then go towards the gold or caramel tones. Bold, contrasting colors would be a few shades either lighter or darker then your hair color. Chunky can go both ways.

  3. Step 3

Get your hair ready to go. Washing a day or two ahead of time is preferable to maintain the natural oils. This will help to prevent damage to your scalp and hair.

  4. Step 4

Prepare the area and take out all of the materials needed. Have a few extra paper towels on hand to catch dripping.

  5. Step 5

Part your hair the way you normally wear it before applying the highlights to ensure proper placement.

  6. Step 6

Follow the directions on the box very carefully. You might even have a friend help you since the back and top is harder to reach on your own.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to pull thick strands in order to achieve that chunky look.
  • If all of this is too much to handle, than go to the salon and have them do it for you. It will be more expensive, but if you think you can't do it on your own you will end up in the salon anyway.
  • Highlightingcan be challenging. A professional hair colorist may be the way to go if you are the least bit unsure.
