Decide on what kind of RPG you want to play. Decide if you want to play an MMORPG, which is a massively multiplayer role playing game, or if you want a single player RPG. Consider the setting you want to play in, such as futuristic or fantasy-based.

Search the Internet for an ideal free online RPG. This may not find you a game to play right away but it can give you some good leads into some online RPGs. You will have to wade through a lot of bad games as well.

Visit OnRPG.com. On the left side of the page is a link that says "Free MMORPGs" that you can click on to get a large list of free RPGs. Many of them won't be for you but you can probably find a few that you enjoy.

Try out Runescape. Runescape is a fantasy-based massively multiplayer online RPG. It is free and has more players than most online RPGs. You can create your own character, fight, level up and even sell goods in Runescape.

Give Kingdom of Loathing a chance if you are looking for a more humorous RPG. Kingdom of Loathing uses stick figures for character models, meat as currency and has Turtle Tamers and Pastamancers for characters.
