Sometimes it can be tricky to know how to use Microsoft Word, if a lot of the functions are not used on a regular basis. Help is usually needed when a document you are preparing calls for certain symbols or graph insertions that you don't find right on your keyboard. Listed is a quick overview on placing an overbar in Microsoft Word, or arranging a bar over a character.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Create the Long Vowel

Step1
Go to "Insert" at the top of the Microsoft Word application.
Step2
Select "Symbol."
Step3
Leave the default selection of normal text in the "Font" field.
Step4
Scroll down past the normal characters you see on the keyboard until you see the letters of the alphabet again, but with the overbar symbol over the character.
Step5
Choose the letter you want to use and select "Insert."
Step6
Hit "Cancel" to exit the box and you will find that the character has been inserted into the document. It will also stay in the "Recently Used Symbols" field the next time you open the Symbol box for quicker selection.

Create Shortcut Keys

Step1
Go to "Insert" and select the "Symbol" option.
Step2
Select the "Shortcut Key" and make sure the letter you want to create the shortcut key for is in the "Command" box on your right hand side.
Step3
Use the drop down menu under "Save as" to choose if you want to apply this function to "Normal" (meaning all Microsoft Word documents) or just the current one you are in. It should also list below it the name of the document you are currently working on.
Step4
Click "Assign." If you experience difficulty and need further help, you can type a question for help in the search bar that is located in the top right hand corner of the application.
