You know it is time to decide whether to downsize if your home no longer compliments your lifestyle. Since the time to downsize is often before illness or finances require a move, evaluate your priorities and decide if the time is right to embark on a new, more streamlined lifestyle.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine if you are living in most of the rooms of your home. If your house has become merely a large storage container, you may want to consider downsizing.

  2. Step 2

Evaluate if the house has become difficult to maintain. Consider the cost of hiring services to assist with the yard and cleaning and decide if you would rather spend the money on other activities. Do not forget to factor in the utility costs associated with maintaining a house.

  3. Step 3

Review the property taxes and other assessments levied in your neighborhood. Consider whether you can afford these costs and whether the schools and community services provided are important given your current lifestyle.

  4. Step 4

Recognize that it is easier to move while you still enjoy good health. Downsizing by choice is much easier than downsizing because of need.

  5. Step 5

Visit different types of housing options. An urban loft located near a cultural center may accommodate your present lifestyle more than a suburban house with a yard.

  6. Step 6

Listen to friends and family if they suggest downsizing. Encourage friends and family to search out varied housing opportunities. You may be pleasantly surprised at the options presented to you.

  7. Step 7

Investigate the costs associated with adapting your home to accommodate your changing needs. The stairs that are easily climbed today may be a challenge tomorrow.
