Step 1
Go to a reputable bicycle shop or sports equipment store. People working in a bike shop are going to know more about what bike helmets to buy then a clerk from a department store will.
-
Step 2
Think about style last and safety first when you buy a bike helmet. Look at helmets that have safety features built into their designed such as brightly colored shells and shock absorbing padding.
-
Step 3
Try on helmets that you are interested in to make sure that they fit your head properly. Bike helmets should be level on your head and be slightly snug. Also, there shouldn't be gaps between the helmet and the circumference of your scalp.
-
Step 4
Shop for a quality helmet. Look for bike helmets that have a CPSC sticker inside of it. While this certification is not legally required, it will help you to spot quality helmets that have important safety features built into their designs.
-
Step 5
Use common sense when examining a bicycle helmet. Make sure it doesn't have design pieces sticking out. Also check for good ventilation. Avoid dark colors, complicated straps, straps that are narrow and poorly designed visors that can catch on things during a fall.
