Step 1
Do your homework before you shop if you're looking for something specific like a new computer, sandals or a stereo system. While you can expect salespeople to be experts and be willing to answer your questions, you should know approximately what you're looking for so they can better help you find it.
-
Step 2
Be polite. Smile and be understanding of long lines, busy customer service reps and busy sale people. It's not always the fault of the person who is helping you. Customer service reps and sales people have rules and guidelines they have to follow and most of the time, they're doing the best they can.
-
Step 3
Leave the store the way you found it. Refold clothing, pick up your trash and don't open products without asking the salesperson if it is permitted.
-
Step 4
Keep you voice calm if you need to file a complaint. Yelling will not get you what you want. If the customer service person or the sales rep can't get you what you want, ask to speak to a supervisor and then the supervisor's manager if you're still struggling. Be polite, but extremely firm. It may be that what you ask for is not possible. Be willing to back down or take your business elsewhere if the store simply can't do what you need.
-
Step 5
Find out if a store has a reward type card and sign up. Reward cards will usually get you bonus points, discounts and coupons just for signing up and using the card.
-
Step 6
Respond to surveys. While surveys can be a pain, these are important things that allow companies to make the changes that you want them to make. Responding to surveys, telling companies what works and what doesn't, is a great way to change a policy you don't like or make sure a policy you like continues.

Step 7
Refer your friend and family. Many businesses offer bonuses or rewards for referring a friend or family members.
