Jumping rope is great exercise and a lot of fun for both the young and the old. Adults can reap the benefits of this exercise because it is a quick calorie burner, gets rid of fat and tones muscles. If you are just beginning to jump, you may get frustrated at first, but with practice you will be able to build up your coordination as you improve.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A jump rope
  • Sneakers with good support

Step1
Hold an end of the rope in each hand. Position the rope behind you on the ground.
Step2
Raise your arms up and turn the rope over your head bringing it down in front of you. When it reaches the ground, jump over it.
Step3
Find a good turning pace, not too slow and not too fast; however you're the most comfortable.
Step4
Jump twice each time the rope comes around; one big jump over the rope and one small one when the rope is over your head.
Step5
Listen to the sound as the rope hits the concrete and jump to the rhythm.
Step6
Practice, practice, practice. You may not get it right away, but in time you will. Keep at it and don't give up; it is good exercise.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have a store bought jump rope, you can use a clothesline or any other type of rope.
  • Once you become good at it, you can jump rope with a friend. The two of you stand face to face and turn the rope like you normally do, but bring it over each of your heads together.
  • You can also run while jumping rope or kick one foot out at a time as you jump.
  • Be careful with young children starting out jumping rope, as they can trip themselves with the rope as they jump.
