Hire Happy Employees

Happy employees lure new clients and keep old clients coming back for more. They also make the workplace more enjoyable for the employer and the other employees. Happy employees are more productive than unhappy ones. Here are a few things to consider when searching for the happiest employees around.

Instructions

    • 1

Hire optimistic employees. During the interview, ask open ended questions that require the applicant to respond to a problem. If the person answers with a doom and gloom response, think twice about hiring him. If the person responds with a positive upbeat answer ask a few more questions to see if she is a true optimist.

Hire people with goals. People with goals are determined to get to a destination. They will do what it takes to get to that destination. People with goals also know what they want out of life and are not swayed by any new idea or emotion. You want well grounded people that are going somewhere, preferably in the same direction as you.

Conduct a pre-employment test. There are several tests out there that test different pre-employment subjects. Choose the personality test. The American Psychological Association describes the aspects of personality tests on its website.

    • 4

Set out the happy policy when interviewing. Let the applicant know what the company expectations are and ask if the applicant is willing to take part in a happy workplace. Discuss ways the company keeps its employees happy and how the employee can be happy at work.

    • 5

Be a role model. People will act as they are expected to act if the executives and management is acting that way, too. A happy employer sets the tone for the other employees. Clearly demonstrate your expectations through being a role model.

    • 6

Reward good behavior. Set up a reward program that rewards both performance and happy behavior. If an employee helps another employee without being asked, reward the helper. If an employee works extra for a person out sick, reward him. Gift cards, race tickets, the right to leave early or a simple thank you note work well as rewards.
