Skiing is a fun activity the whole family can enjoy. With the right instruction and patience, any child who is ready to ski can be taught. The most important thing to remember about teaching a child to ski is that it should be fun, both for you and for your child. Before you know it, the whole family will be hitting the slopes for a fun day in the snow.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clothing in layers
  • Ski helmet or hat
  • Goggles
  • Insulated snow pants and jacket
  • Waterproof gloves or mittens
  • Sunscreen
  • Ski leash
  • Tip and wedge locks
  1. Step 1

Evaluate your child's strength and endurance. Walking in skis and boots requires some muscle. Make sure he or she can tolerate being out in the cold for long periods of time too, even with the proper outerwear.

  2. Step 2

Get the right equipment. Do not use cheap skis or accessories. Decide if renting or buying is best for you.

  3. Step 3

Use teaching aids. Ski leashes and tip and wedge locks are available to help your child feel more comfortable and give you more control over her while on the slopes.

  4. Step 4

Start slowly but consistently. Make an effort to have your child practice for three or four days in a row. Consistency and repetition will help establish the movements your child will need to know.

  5. Step 5

Enroll your child in ski lessons. Check out ski schools and inquire about their child programs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure ski instructors are certified in teaching children.
  • Use a ski instructor to teach your child, even if you are an experienced skier.
  • Know when to stop. If your child is tired, take a break and resume practicing the next day.

on 7/20/2009 If you know how to ski (intermediate level), you can teach your child to ski on your own and save a TON of money. Ski school isn't required.
