Step 1
Get experience working with animals. Often, this is more important than education. Work or volunteer at veterinary offices, zoos, animal shelters or farms.
-
Step 2
Study biology, zoology, primatology or animal science. A four year degree will make you more competitive in your job hunt, but it isn't always necessary. Be sure to take a class or two in speech and plant biology as well.
-
Step 3
Get an internship at a zoo. Most have an internship program.
-
Step 4
Specialize your education. If you're interested in working with gorillas someday, take classes in primatology or anthropology. If you would like to care for dolphins, take courses in marine biology.
-
Step 5
Enter a professional training program from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
-
Step 6
Be prepared to move. Even large cities usually only have one zoo and the closest zoo to you may not be hiring when you're looking for a job. Send your resume to lots of zoos.
