Creating a plan for your home-painting project will make the job much easier. By taking some time to think about what you need to accomplish before you begin the project, you can save a lot of time and effort. Just follow these steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand paint. There are different finishes and sheens; some paint types are more suitable for certain areas of the home. Visit a paint store and talk with an expert who can show you the difference between various types of paints and recommend what you should use for each part of your project.

  2. Step 2

Decide what colors you want. Think about the furniture and accent pieces you will have in each room and how these will look with the newly painted walls. Choose colors that you like and that will complement the things you already own.

  3. Step 3

Determine how much paint you need. Measure the rooms you plan on painting. Typically, paint will cover 300 to 400 square feet per gallon. For a professional look and higher durability, buy twice as much paint and put two coats on the walls.

  4. Step 4

Make a list of the supplies you'll need to complete your home-painting project. Remember to include brushes, rollers, buckets and painter's tape. Head to your local paint store and get everything you need.

  5. Step 5

Prepare the rooms in your home before you begin painting. You must protect the floors and trim, as well as repair any cracks or holes. Sand the walls for a smoother surface and wash them to remove dirt. Apply primer before painting, if necessary.

  6. Step 6

    Start painting.
