Determine how much paint you need. Measure the rooms you plan on painting. Typically, paint will cover 300 to 400 square feet per gallon. For a professional look and higher durability, buy twice as much paint and put two coats on the walls.

Make a list of the supplies you'll need to complete your home-painting project. Remember to include brushes, rollers, buckets and painter's tape. Head to your local paint store and get everything you need.

Prepare the rooms in your home before you begin painting. You must protect the floors and trim, as well as repair any cracks or holes. Sand the walls for a smoother surface and wash them to remove dirt. Apply primer before painting, if necessary.
