Growing an afro can take considerable time. It's a commitment well worth it. Follow these basic tips to make growing an afro a bit smoother.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wide-toothed comb or pick
  • Hair oil or moisturizer
  1. Step 1

Trim your hair one last time before beginning to grow your hair out. This haircut will help to stimulate scalp growth and promote follicle health.

  2. Step 2

Care for your hair while growing it out. Moisturizing the scalp is important during the growth process as it helps keep hair from breaking and splitting.

  3. Step 3

Attain a wide toothed comb or pick to comb through the hair during growth to prevent breakage. Smaller combs break hair follicles and impede healthy strands from flourishing.

  4. Step 4

Let your hair grow for approximately 5 to 6 months, depending on your hair-growth pattern. Some people may take less time, some longer. Various supplements are available to supposedly speed growth, but the best medicine is simply scalp stimulation and time.

  5. Step 5

Trim your afro to ensure growth is even on each side. Continue to moisturize and using your wide tooth pick to manage your hair. You may go to a stylist to have them help you shape your afro so that it remains neat and even.

  6. Step 6

Enjoy your afro...you've worked for it. Maintaining it should be easy, given the new skills you've acquired in hair care.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to avoid breakage by not combing your hair too much.
  • Wash your hair 2 to 3 times a week depending upon the dryness level.
  • Braid or corn-row your hair to help to speed the growth process.
  • Do not overtrim your hair; too much trimming will impede the growth process.
