Things You'll Need:

  • Computer access
  • Planning time
  1. Step 1

Book plane tickets online. There are dozens of websites that help budget-conscious travelers track rates on fares. Plane fares are like stock prices, they vary daily.

  2. Step 2

Sign up at different sites and ask that they email information on promotions, reductions and rebates on airfare. The trick is to use several travel sites to help track the fares to get the best deal.

  3. Step 3

Start by going to these websites: Travelocity, Expedia and Orbitz. Sign up at each site, indicating the point of departure and the desired destination. These sites alert customers of fares as they change. Also, sign on at Ebates and get some great discounts and rebates on airfare.

  4. Step 4

Get an account at Yapta. This website is the gateway to getting rebates and/or price reductions on airline tickets. Yapta promotes itself as "your amazing personal travel assistant." Yapta does not book flights, nor does it obtain rebates, but it alerts customers of the best time to buy tickets and the availability of rebates when a customer has already booked a flight and the price goes down. Yapta works with 11 airline sites, as well as the three travel search engines listed in Step 3.

  5. Step 5

Let Yapta do the work. Yapta tracks the fares, sends email notifications regarding changes so that customers know when to make their purchase and get refunds, if available. Essentially, the website informs travelers when ticket prices drop on a given flight and if it is possible to obtain a travel voucher, rollover or rebate.
