How to Move a Mattress
Getting a bed from one place to another is a challenge for movers. The bed frame can be neatly packed up and carted off, but the mattress presents a more difficult problem. Most of getting mattresses from A to B is common sense, but there are a few decisions that need to be made along the way. Does this Spark an idea?

Pack up the frame and get it out of the way. Don't try to move the entire bed at once. Get the mattresses stripped and set up on their sides.

Get 2 people for each mattress. Trying to wrestle a soft mattress or box spring down the stairs by yourself is silly. Watch all wall and ceiling thresholds and move it out the same way it came in, if possible.

Cover the mattresses in the moving truck, and make sure they are strapped in. Be sure your vehicle is an adequate size: trying to get a mattress set into a station wagon usually doesn't work very well. Rent a vehicle if necessary.

When you get to the destination, measure the doors and windows to see where you can actually bring the mattress in. Don't try to fold the soft mattress to get it through the door. Use a tape measure to assess whether the mattress will actually fit.

Make use of outside stairs or windows. Look for easy alternatives, such as second-story decks and verandas in tract housing. Sometimes the best way to bring in a mattress to a second floor is by hoisting it up and in through a window or second story door.
